Sealing on its own is almost never a radon fix, and anyone who sells it as one is taking your money. What it is, is the difference between a system that works and a system that hums. A fan can only depressurize the space under a slab if the slab is reasonably airtight — every open crack, every unsealed pipe penetration and, above all, every open sump pit is a shortcut that lets the fan pull conditioned room air instead of soil gas. In a lot of Denver basements the sump pit is the single biggest hole in the floor and nobody has ever put a lid on it.
Let us be blunt about this, because it is the most commonly oversold idea in the trade. Filling the visible cracks in a basement floor will not reliably bring a high radon reading down. Concrete keeps moving, new cracks open, and gas comes through the whole floor rather than only the parts you can see. Anyone quoting sealing as a standalone radon solution is selling something that has a poor record of working. What sealing does is make an active system effective — and that role is not optional at all.
A mitigation fan has a fixed amount of work in it. If the slab above the gravel is reasonably tight, that work goes into depressurizing the soil. If the slab is full of open paths, a large share of it goes into pulling heated room air straight down through those paths and out of the roof. The result is a system that is simultaneously worse at its job and more expensive to run. Sealing is the cheapest performance upgrade available on any radon system, which is why it belongs in the install rather than in a follow-up quote.
In a great many Denver basements, the sump pit is an open shaft directly into the gravel under the slab, with nothing over it but a loose board or nothing at all. It is often a larger opening than every crack in the floor put together. The fix is a sealed, gasketed lid with a proper access panel, so the pump, the float and the discharge line all remain serviceable and the pit stops being an open door. On some houses the pit is actually the best place to draw suction from, which turns the biggest problem into the neatest solution.
A floor drain with a dried-out trap is the same problem in miniature. The answer is a trap primer or a trap seal insert rather than sealing it shut, because you still want the drain to work the day something leaks. Control joints and the floor-to-wall perimeter joint get routed and filled with a flexible sealant rather than a rigid filler — the joint exists because the slab moves, and a rigid fill simply cracks again on the first cycle.
Not by looking at it. Sealing is verified against fan performance and against the reading afterwards, not by inspecting the caulk lines. If the system is pulling well and the retest lands where it should, the sealing did its job. In a house over a bare dirt floor the whole idea scales up into a sealed membrane, which is the same principle applied to a surface with no concrete in it at all.
