Lakewood sits against the first ridge, and geology is a bigger factor here than in most of the metro. The western neighbourhoods around Green Mountain and Bear Creek are close to steeply tilted sedimentary beds where fractured rock carries soil gas efficiently rather than diffusing it slowly. Housing is largely 1950s–70s — Belmar-era ranches with half basements, plenty of split-levels, and some post-war crawlspace construction.
Lakewood's western edge runs up against the first rise of the Front Range, and geology matters more here than it does out on the plains side of the metro. Near the hogback the sedimentary beds are steeply tilted rather than flat-lying, and fractured rock at that angle is an efficient conduit — soil gas travels along bedding planes and fracture sets instead of diffusing slowly through dense clay. A house on that ground can read high without anything unusual about the house itself, which is exactly why the reading and not the neighbourhood is what decides.
Lakewood is full of split-levels and tri-levels, and they are the house type that gets tested wrong more than any other. There are two defensible candidates for the lowest lived-in level: the lower family room, and the crawl or sub-basement beneath it. They read differently, and the difference frequently decides whether a result lands above or below the action level. The protocol points at the lowest level that is finished or could reasonably be finished and lived in, which in almost every Lakewood split is the family room — not the space under it.
Belmar-era ranches and the 1960s and 70s stock around Green Mountain very often have a basement that is half finished and half bare. For testing that is straightforward — the monitor goes in the finished half, because that is where people are. For mitigation it is the awkward case: the ideal suction point is frequently under the finished side, and cutting into a finished floor is a materially different conversation from cutting into open concrete. It is worth flagging on the phone, because it is one of the few things that reliably changes the shape of a quote.
Split-level construction often means two ground-contact slabs at different elevations, separated by a foundation wall, poured at different times. They do not share a pressure field. A fan pulling on one may do nothing at all for the other, and a system designed on the assumption that they connect leaves half the house exactly as it was. Establishing whether they communicate is a diagnostic, not a guess.

Most jobs start with a test; where two slabs turn out to need separate treatment, the system is designed around that rather than around the floor plan.
